History

MONEYGALL FOOTBALL CLUB:

An impromptu friendly game against Shinrone in 1978 led to Kieran Costello, Gerry Hayes and Matt Douglas forming a club that would encourage and promote the sport of Soccer in the Moneygall community.

The growth of the club over a short period led to a second team being formed in 1981/1982 when Moneygall FC had its pitch based in Gravel park.

The mid 1980’s also witnessed the formation of youth and school children’s soccer in the club where players joined from neighbouring villages and parishes so they could enjoy the beautiful game. The club was evolving and recognised to maintain future adult teams we needed to train and encourage the youth to get involved.

Moneygall FC in the 1990’s continued to see growth in the club and relocated to Barna for a number of years and then to Ballingrawn. The frustration of renting agricultural land made it hard for the club to really expand, and offer all year-round facilities to our members or community.

In 2007 Moneygall FC committed at its AGM to begin its search for land, the club witnessed the demand and need for the same as we had players leave our club for others with better facilities. The club and committee needed to build a club and facilities to ensure the survival of our rural club into the future. Our continual fundraising and patience ensured we were successful in acquiring our current grounds and developing a full-sized playing pitch in the heart of Moneygall Village.

2017 saw this ground officially open with the Moneygall Masters v Republic of Ireland Masters, the club was debt free and had a facility that hosted one of the best pitches in North Tipp Leagues. The club recognised none of this would have been possible without the support and financial aid of our community and we gave a section of our land over for a Community Garden and the construction of a Community Walking Track.

The club has had many highlights off the pitch, we have been fortunate on two occasions in the past ten years having our members act as ball kids for the Republic of Ireland International games in the Aviva Stadium.

The club has also had the privilege to also act as ball kids in the Tallaght Stadium for Shamrock Rovers. We also commenced Summer Soccer Camps in 2018 on our new grounds, opening up our sport to more locals and giving an enjoyable experience during the school break and also hosting Soccer Sisters during Easter holidays and seeing our membership blossom with new female members since we opened our community grounds. We also have hosted friendly blitz for girls teams in North Tipperary to compete for the Kieran Costello Memorial Cup. The club has also received a number of awards from North Tipperary District League and in early 2021 we were awarded the Club Mark by the FAI. Our committee member Tomas Quinlan has been recognised with the first Sports Hero Award by Nenagh Guardian and in the past few weeks was recognised with a sports volunteer award by the Federation of Irish Sport for his contribution to our club and the sport over the years.
